Pedro Rodríguez has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 39, bringing an end to a remarkable career that saw him win major honours with Barcelona, Chelsea and Spain before finding a special connection with Italian football.

The former Barcelona, Chelsea, Roma and Lazio forward confirmed his decision in an emotional farewell message, saying he felt the time had come to begin a new chapter in his life.

“I feel the time has come. The time to take a step forward and begin a new chapter in my life.”

Pedro’s retirement comes four months after his contract with Lazio expired, closing the door on a playing career that began in Tenerife and eventually took him to some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

From Tenerife to Barcelona

Pedro’s rise to the top of European football began at Barcelona, where he became an important member of Pep Guardiola’s celebrated side.

During his time at Camp Nou, the winger collected a remarkable haul of major honours, including three UEFA Champions League titles and several La Liga championships.

Reflecting on those years in his farewell message, Pedro described playing for that Barcelona team as a privilege.

“Being part of the best Barça in history was a privilege. We won everything and amazed the world.”

He was never always the first name mentioned alongside Barcelona’s biggest stars, but his consistency, movement and ability to contribute in important moments made him a trusted part of one of the most successful teams of the era.

A World Champion With Spain

Pedro’s success extended beyond club football.

He was part of Spain’s golden generation and won the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship in 2012.

He also started the 2010 World Cup final as Spain defeated the Netherlands to become world champions.

For a player whose career began far from the spotlight in Tenerife, reaching the summit of international football represented another extraordinary chapter.

Starting Again at Chelsea

After leaving Barcelona in 2015, Pedro moved to Chelsea and took on a new challenge in England.

The transition proved successful.

Across five seasons at Stamford Bridge, he added a Premier League title, an FA Cup and a Europa League trophy to his collection.

His success in England reinforced one of the defining characteristics of his career: Pedro could adapt.

He had already succeeded in Barcelona’s possession-heavy system, and he continued to contribute after moving to a different league and football culture.

Italy Touched His Heart

The final chapter of Pedro’s playing career took place in Italy.

He joined Roma in 2020 before crossing the capital to Lazio a year later, and it was in Italy that his farewell message became particularly emotional.

Speaking to Italian supporters, Pedro delivered perhaps the most personal words of his retirement announcement.

“Italy touched my heart. I arrived as a veteran and you treated me like a son.”

The words captured the affection he developed for Italian football during the closing years of his career.

Rather than focusing only on trophies, Pedro used his farewell to thank the people who had shared the journey with him.

“The best thing wasn’t the titles, it was all of you.”

More Than the Trophies

Pedro leaves football with a medal collection that speaks for itself.

A World Cup winner.

A European champion.

A three-time Champions League winner.

A Premier League champion.

An FA Cup winner.

A Europa League winner.

But his career was about more than the silverware.

Pedro became the kind of player elite teams value enormously: adaptable, disciplined and capable of contributing without needing to be the centre of attention.

That may ultimately be one of the defining parts of his legacy.

Football has produced countless players whose brilliance made them the face of an era. Pedro’s story is different.

He was often the player alongside the headline stars — but he kept winning.

At Barcelona, he won everything.

With Spain, he became a world and European champion.

At Chelsea, he added more major trophies.

And in Italy, he found an emotional connection that remained important to him until the end.

The End of a Remarkable Career

Pedro’s playing career is now officially over.

What comes next remains unknown, but his farewell message was focused firmly on gratitude and the people who shaped his journey.

After nearly two decades in professional football, the Spaniard leaves the game having won major honours across Spain, England and Italy and having represented his country at the highest level.

Not every great player becomes the face of an era.

Some become the players every great team needs.

Pedro Rodríguez was one of them.

And now, at 39, he is saying goodbye.

Thank you, Pedro.
