Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed he is not retiring from international football, but says he deserves to be punished for walking out on Portugal after accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word to him twice.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain broke his silence in a lengthy statement explaining why he left the national team’s training camp before the Nations League match against Denmark.

Ronaldo accepted responsibility for his decision to leave, apologised to his teammates and supporters, and said the Portuguese Football Federation should punish him for his actions.

But he also gave his version of the dispute with Jesus, claiming the coach first promised him playing time against Norway before changing the plan and later failed to follow through on an agreement about how the incident would be explained publicly. 

“The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for them. I believe the punishment should not be reduced.”

Despite the fallout, Ronaldo made it clear that his international career is not over.

Ronaldo Accepts Responsibility

Ronaldo’s departure from the Portugal camp caused significant controversy after he was left on the bench during the team’s Nations League victory over Norway.

He subsequently left the camp ahead of the match against Denmark.

In his statement, Ronaldo did not attempt to dismiss his own actions.

Instead, he acknowledged that walking away was wrong.

He apologised to Portugal’s supporters, his teammates and those who had travelled to watch him, while accepting that his position as captain made his conduct more serious.

“The responsibility falls on me alone.”

That admission was accompanied by a firm position on what should happen next.

Ronaldo said the federation should assess his actions and impose whatever punishment it considers appropriate. He also made clear that he would remain available for Portugal after serving any suspension. 

Ronaldo Says Jesus Broke His Word

The heart of Ronaldo’s statement, however, was his explanation of what happened with Jesus.

According to Ronaldo, the pair had previously agreed on a plan designed to manage his workload during the international window.

He said the original arrangement meant he would not play against Norway or Denmark as part of his physical management.

But Ronaldo claimed that changed on the day of the Norway match.

Jesus allegedly asked whether Ronaldo was fit enough to play 30 minutes.

Ronaldo said he agreed and was told to prepare to enter the match.

He then warmed up from half-time but was never brought onto the pitch.

“The manager had broken his word to me.”

Ronaldo said the incident damaged his trust in the coach and became the first of two occasions on which he believed Jesus failed to honour an agreement. 

The Eight-Point Agreement

The dispute did not end with the Norway match.

Ronaldo said he later met with Jesus and Al-Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho to discuss what had happened.

According to Ronaldo, the meeting produced an eight-point document that Jesus had agreed to use when explaining the situation publicly.

Among the points Ronaldo said were agreed were that he had never demanded playing time, had respected Jesus’s decisions and that asking a player of Ronaldo’s stature to warm up without eventually bringing him onto the pitch had been a mistake. 

One of the proposed points referred to Ronaldo’s stature alongside legendary figures Pelé and Diego Maradona.

Ronaldo stressed that the document did not require Jesus to apologise to him personally.

His complaint was that the coach’s subsequent public comments did not match what they had discussed privately.

That, Ronaldo said, became the second breach of trust.

“It was the second time he had broken his word to me.”

Ronaldo then decided to leave the training camp.

Jesus Disputes Ronaldo’s Account

There is an important distinction in the story.

Ronaldo’s account is his version of events, not an independently established account of everything that happened privately between the two men.

Jesus has denied that he made the agreement Ronaldo described, while previously leaving the door open to the captain returning to the national team. The Portuguese Football Federation had not immediately responded publicly to Ronaldo’s latest statement. 

That means the dispute currently contains two competing versions.

Ronaldo says there was an understanding that was broken.

Jesus disputes the existence of that agreement.

What is not disputed is that Ronaldo left the camp and has now accepted responsibility for doing so.

Ronaldo Is Still Available for Portugal

Despite the public fallout, Ronaldo has not closed the door on his international career.

He said that if he remains physically fit, continues playing for his club and is scoring goals, he will be available to represent Portugal after serving whatever suspension is imposed.

That is significant because Ronaldo had previously considered ending his international career after the 2026 World Cup.

He now intends to continue.

“I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team.”

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances according to current reporting. He has helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and two Nations League titles. 

A Dispute About Trust

GUZ Analysis

The most revealing part of Ronaldo’s statement may not be the argument over whether he should have played against Norway.

It is the importance he places on trust.

Ronaldo’s position is not simply that he was unhappy about being left on the bench. He says he accepted the original plan and respected Jesus’s authority before the coach changed the arrangement.

Then, according to Ronaldo, a second agreement about how the situation would be explained publicly was not followed.

That turns the dispute from a straightforward selection disagreement into a conflict over communication and trust.

But the other side matters too.

Jesus is the national-team coach, and decisions over substitutions and playing time ultimately belong to him. Ronaldo himself accepts that he should not have responded to the situation by leaving the camp.

The unresolved question is therefore not simply who was right about one substitution.

It is whether the relationship between Portugal’s greatest international goalscorer and its current head coach can function effectively after such a public breakdown.

What Happens Next?

For Ronaldo, the immediate issue is punishment.

He has effectively told the Portuguese Football Federation that he accepts the consequences of walking out but does not consider the incident the end of his international career.

For Jesus, the challenge is managing the situation while maintaining authority over the squad.

Portugal will return to Nations League action in November, when the team faces Denmark and Wales. Ronaldo says he intends to be available after serving any suspension that may be imposed. 

The relationship between Ronaldo and Jesus remains the bigger question.

Ronaldo has apologised.

He has accepted responsibility.

But he has also made his position clear:

He believes Jorge Jesus broke his word twice.

And despite everything that has happened, Cristiano Ronaldo is not ready to say goodbye to Portugal just yet.
