Irish Racer Alex Dunne Penalised After F2 Melbourne Collision

It was a weekend of highs and lows for Alex Dunne at the F2 Australian Grand Prix. The 20-year-old Irishman impressed in qualifying and Saturday’s sprint, but his feature race ended in frustration after a collision with teammate Martinius Stenshorne.

The Incident

  • Dunne qualified P3 and surged to P2 at the start of Sunday’s feature race.
  • On Lap 2, he battled Stenshorne side-by-side through Turns 11–13.
  • Heading into Lap 3, contact between the Rodin Motorsport teammates sent both cars out of the race.
  • Stewards ruled Dunne “predominantly responsible,” handing him a 10-second penalty, converted into a five-place grid drop for the next round in Sakhir.

The Results

  • Winner: Nikola Tsolov (Campos Racing) — first Bulgarian to win in F2.
  • 2nd: Rafael Camara (Invicta Racing).
  • 3rd: Laurens van Hoepen (Trident).

Dunne’s Weekend

  • Saturday sprint: Climbed from P8 to P4, overtaking Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak on the final lap.
  • Later promoted to P3 after Stenshorne’s penalty, securing a podium.
  • Despite Sunday’s disappointment, Dunne showed pace and promise on his return.
