Ricky Collard Loses Maiden BTCC Win After Brands Hatch Penalty

Ricky Collard appeared to secure his maiden British Touring Car Championship victory at Brands Hatch, but a five-second penalty for a safety-car restart infringement changed the result. Dan Cammish inherited the Race 3 win, Ash Sutton finished second and Dexter Patterson took third, while Collard dropped to eighth in the final classification.

Ricky Collard appeared to have secured the breakthrough victory he had chased throughout his British Touring Car Championship career, but a five-second penalty turned his Brands Hatch triumph into disappointment and handed Dan Cammish victory in the final race of the 2026 season.

Collard crossed the finish line first in Race 3 at Brands Hatch on Sunday, October 11, after surviving a chaotic contest featuring multiple safety-car interruptions and fierce battles at the front. However, officials subsequently penalised the Team VERTU driver for a procedural infringement during a safety-car restart.

The penalty dropped Collard from first to eighth in the final classification, promoting Cammish to the top step of the podium.

For Collard, it was a cruel end to a race that had looked set to deliver one of the most significant moments of his BTCC career. For Cammish, it produced a third victory of the campaign and an unexpected reward after finishing second on the road.

The revised result was confirmed by the championship’s official website and Brands Hatch.

Collard Takes the Lead in a Chaotic Opening

The final BTCC race of the season began with Dexter Patterson on pole position after the reverse-grid draw.

Collard started third but made an aggressive move at the start, gaining ground immediately and taking the lead during the opening lap.

The race quickly descended into chaos behind him. A multi-car incident at Paddock Hill Bend brought the races of Tom Chilton and Tom Ingram to an early end. Nick Halstead and Lewis Selby were also caught up in the opening-lap drama.

Chilton’s retirement was particularly significant because the Brands Hatch event marked his final BTCC appearance. Ingram, meanwhile, had won the first two races of the day before his afternoon ended in the incident.

The disruption brought out the safety car, interrupting Collard’s early advantage and forcing the field to regroup.

When racing resumed on lap seven, the Team VERTU driver made a clean restart and retained the lead. He had survived the opening chaos, but the race was far from settled.

Ash Sutton Turns Up the Pressure

Ash Sutton soon emerged as Collard’s principal challenger.

The five-time BTCC champion worked his way forward and began applying pressure to the leader, setting up a battle between two drivers determined to finish the season on a high.

Sutton attempted to challenge Collard around the circuit, but the fight became increasingly tense as both drivers pushed to gain an advantage.

At Westfield, Sutton ran onto the grass while attempting to maintain his challenge. The excursion cost him several positions, sending him tumbling down the order before he began recovering through the field.

The incident gave Collard some breathing room at the front, although Dan Cammish was also making progress.

Cammish worked his way past Patterson and moved into second, placing himself in position to challenge for victory as the race entered its closing stages.

The contest remained unpredictable. Another safety-car period followed when Dan Rowbottom’s car stopped with its front brakes on fire, interrupting the battle once again.

A Second Restart Sets Up the Finish

The race resumed on lap 15, leaving the drivers with a short but crucial run to the chequered flag.

Collard once again led the field away and attempted to maintain his advantage through the closing laps.

Behind him, Cammish and Sutton continued their fight for the remaining podium positions. Sutton recovered from his earlier excursion and eventually challenged Cammish on the final lap.

The pair exchanged positions during a tense sequence at Paddock Hill Bend. Sutton moved ahead, but contact followed, and he allowed his teammate back through before the finish.

Collard crossed the line first, apparently completing a long-awaited maiden BTCC victory.

Cammish finished second on the road, with Sutton third. Patterson followed behind them after a race in which he had briefly led from pole position.

For a moment, the result appeared to be settled.

It was not.

Five-Second Penalty Changes the Winner

After the race, officials applied a five-second penalty to Collard for an infringement of the safety-car restart procedure.

The sanction was decisive. Rather than retaining the victory, Collard fell to eighth in the final classification.

Cammish was promoted from second to first, securing his third race victory of the 2026 campaign. Sutton moved into second, while Patterson inherited third place.

The final classification therefore differed significantly from the order in which the drivers crossed the finish line.

The penalty was not simply a minor adjustment to the results. It changed the identity of the race winner and denied Collard the maiden BTCC victory that had appeared within his grasp.

The official championship classification lists Cammish first, Sutton second, Patterson third and Collard eighth.

What the Result Means for Collard

Collard’s performance demonstrated that he had the pace to compete at the front during the season finale.

He took the lead early, survived two safety-car interruptions and resisted pressure from experienced rivals during the closing stages. On track, he did enough to cross the line first.

But motorsport results depend on more than the order at the finish. Drivers must also comply with the regulations governing the race, including procedures during safety-car restarts.

The penalty proved costly because it erased the result that would have represented a major personal milestone.

It is important, however, to distinguish between the on-track performance and the official outcome. Collard led the race and crossed the line first, but he was not the classified winner after the penalty.

That distinction is central to the story.

Cammish Benefits From the Late Decision

For Cammish, the revised result delivered a victory after a competitive race in which he had worked his way into contention.

The NAPA Racing UK driver spent much of the event battling Patterson and Sutton before moving into second place and pursuing Collard.

Although he did not cross the line first, his position behind Collard placed him in the best position to inherit the victory once the penalty was applied.

The win became his third of the season and provided a strong finish to the campaign.

Sutton also recovered well from his excursion, climbing back through the field to finish second after the revised classification. Patterson completed the podium, capping a notable season in which he secured the Jack Sears Trophy.

A Dramatic End to the 2026 BTCC Season

The Brands Hatch finale delivered the kind of drama that can make touring-car racing unpredictable until the official results are confirmed.

Collard looked set to enjoy a breakthrough moment. Sutton challenged him, Cammish moved into contention, and multiple interruptions compressed the field. Then the post-race penalty changed the result altogether.

For Collard, the disappointment will be difficult to separate from the strength of his drive. He had led the race and crossed the line first, only to see the victory taken away by a procedural infringement.

For Cammish, the outcome was a reminder that every position matters and that the final classification is determined by the regulations as well as performance on the circuit.

The final result is official: Dan Cammish won Race 3 at Brands Hatch, Ash Sutton finished second, Dexter Patterson took third, and Ricky Collard was classified eighth after his five-second penalty.

Collard’s maiden BTCC victory will have to wait.
