Accrington Stanley snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over Barrow in Sky Bet League Two thanks to substitute Josh Woods, who headed home a stoppage‑time winner.
Stanley had taken the lead in the 30th minute when Benn Ward’s deflected strike found the net, but Barrow hit back through Charlie McCann just before half‑time. The visitors nearly stole it late on when Josh Gordon fired over from close range in the 83rd minute.
Instead, Woods rose to meet Shaun Whalley’s free‑kick at the death, ending Accrington’s run of successive defeats and sparking wild celebrations.
Manager John Doolan praised Woods’ impact:
“Josh needed that goal. He has had his critics but we have to challenge him. He did all that we asked when he came on and got his rewards for his hard work.”
Doolan also hailed Ward’s contribution, calling him “a colossus” after his opening strike.
For Barrow, interim boss Neil McDonald admitted his side deserved more:
“Football can be very cruel. We deserved at least a point and came close to three, but it was not to be. We are just a little bit too soft at defending and have to be more aggressive.”
The defeat leaves Barrow still searching for their first win in nine league attempts, while Accrington climb further clear of the relegation battle.
