The Golden State Warriors will begin the new NBA season without Kristaps Porziņģis available, with the veteran center remaining sidelined indefinitely because of an undisclosed health-related issue.
Golden State confirmed on Wednesday, October 14, that Porziņģis would continue to miss basketball activities but would now remain around the team. The announcement followed his return to the Warriors’ practice facility in San Francisco, where he met with general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and vice president of player health and performance Dr. Rick Celebrini.
The meeting provided a sign of renewed contact between Porziņģis and the organisation after he missed training camp and the team’s opening five preseason games. However, it did not produce a return date or a change to his playing status.
For the Warriors, the immediate challenge is preparing for the regular season without a player they brought in to strengthen their frontcourt. For Porziņģis, the priority remains working with medical professionals to address the issue and regain full health.
The 7-foot-2 center has offered some personal reassurance, saying that he is getting better. Nevertheless, neither his statement nor the team’s announcement establishes when he will be ready to play again.
Warriors Confirm Porziņģis Will Remain With the Team
The Warriors’ announcement clarified an important development in Porziņģis’ situation: although he remains unavailable, he will be around the team while continuing to deal with the same health-related matter.
Golden State said the details of his meeting with Dunleavy and Celebrini would remain private. The organisation also confirmed that another update would be provided when appropriate, including information about a possible return to practice, his playing status or a potential timeline.
That leaves several important questions unanswered as the regular season approaches.
Porziņģis missed the team’s training camp and did not travel with his teammates to Hawaii. His absence extended through the preseason, leaving the Warriors without the opportunity to assess how he would fit into their lineup before competitive basketball began.
His return to the practice facility was therefore a development worth noting, but it should not be mistaken for medical clearance or confirmation that he is close to returning.
The Warriors have not announced a timetable for his recovery.
Porziņģis Says His Health Is Improving
Porziņģis addressed his situation in a social media post on Wednesday, explaining that he was working with doctors and other medical experts to return to good health.
He said he was improving but needed to remain patient, expressing confidence that he would feel better soon.
The message offered a more personal perspective on an absence that had attracted considerable attention because of its length and the limited information available publicly.
Porziņģis also acknowledged the frustration of dealing with health concerns that are difficult to pinpoint, alongside the injuries he has experienced throughout his career.
His comments suggest that the process is ongoing. However, the player has not provided a specific diagnosis for his current issue, and the Warriors have not disclosed one.
GUZ Sport understands that distinction matters: an athlete saying he feels better is encouraging, but it does not automatically mean he is ready for the physical demands of NBA competition.
Until Porziņģis or the team provides a more definitive update, his return should be treated as uncertain.
A Significant Absence for Golden State’s Frontcourt
Porziņģis’ availability matters because of the range of skills he can bring to a team when healthy.
His height gives him a presence around the basket, while his ability to shoot from the perimeter can create space for teammates. At his best, he offers a combination of interior size, outside shooting and rim protection that can influence both ends of the floor.
Those qualities were part of what made his arrival in Golden State an intriguing development.
The Warriors acquired Porziņģis from the Atlanta Hawks before the February 2026 trade deadline. He subsequently appeared in 15 games for Golden State, averaging 16.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 blocks per game across his appearances with the Warriors and Atlanta during the season.
His production demonstrates why his absence could affect the team’s frontcourt plans. However, the bigger issue for Golden State is the uncertainty surrounding when those contributions might become available.
Coaches can plan around a player who is expected to miss a defined period. An indefinite absence is more complicated because it offers no reliable date for a return and makes long-term rotation planning difficult.
For now, the Warriors must prepare their lineups around the players available to them rather than build their immediate plans around Porziņģis.
The Contract Raises the Stakes
Porziņģis agreed to a two-year, $40 million contract with Golden State in late June, reflecting the team’s commitment to keeping him as part of its plans.
The agreement followed a season in which his availability was already limited. He played 32 regular-season games combined for Atlanta and Golden State, making his health an important consideration even before the current absence began.
The new contract does not change the immediate medical priority, but it does underline why the Warriors need clarity whenever reliable information becomes available.
Golden State needs to understand how and when it can integrate Porziņģis into its rotation. The player needs sufficient time to work through his health concerns, and the organisation must avoid treating an uncertain recovery as a fixed schedule.
There is no confirmed indication that his absence will last the entire season. Equally, the team has not provided grounds for assuming that he will return after only a short delay.
At this stage, either conclusion would go beyond the available evidence.
The Season Opener Is Approaching
The Warriors are scheduled to open their 2026–27 regular season against the Los Angeles Lakers on October 21.
With Porziņģis still out indefinitely, his availability for that game is in serious doubt. Golden State has not confirmed that he will play, and there is no announced timeline that would support a prediction about his return.
The team must therefore prepare for the opener without relying on his presence.
That could mean greater responsibility for the frontcourt players available to head coach Steve Kerr, along with adjustments to the team’s defensive matchups and rotation combinations.
Porziņģis’ absence also limits the time Golden State has to establish how its personnel fit together before the regular season begins.
The challenge is not simply replacing his points or rebounds. His height, shooting range and defensive presence offer a different profile from that of smaller lineups, meaning his eventual return could give the coaching staff additional tactical options.
For now, however, those possibilities remain on hold.
What Happens Next?
The next meaningful development will be a medical or team update that clarifies whether Porziņģis can resume practice and move closer to playing.
The Warriors have said they will provide further information when available and appropriate. Until then, there is no confirmed timetable for his return.
His presence around the team is a positive organisational development after his extended absence from camp and preseason activities. His own comments that he is improving also offer some encouragement.
But the central fact remains unchanged: Porziņģis is not available to play, and his return depends on the progress of his recovery.
Golden State enters the season with questions to answer in its frontcourt, while Porziņģis continues working with medical professionals to get back to full health.
For both player and team, patience will be essential. The Warriors must find solutions with the roster available to them, while allowing Porziņģis the time required to address his health.
Until the next official update arrives, his return remains an open question.
