Pep Guardiola is expected to return to the Etihad Stadium next week when Manchester City host Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, marking his first appearance at the stadium since leaving the club at the end of last season.

The former City manager’s return comes at a significant moment for the club, with the reigning Premier League champions facing the fallout from an independent commission’s verdict on the Premier League’s long-running financial case.

City were found guilty of all charges relating to serious financial-rule breaches between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, as well as the majority of the charges concerning their alleged failure to cooperate with the Premier League’s investigation. The club denies wrongdoing and has appealed the findings.

Guardiola Set for Etihad Return

Guardiola is expected to attend City’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, October 14.

It will be his first return to the Etihad since stepping down after a decade in charge of the club.

During his time in Manchester, Guardiola transformed City into one of Europe’s dominant sides, winning six Premier League titles, including four consecutive championships from 2020-21, as well as the Champions League, three FA Cups and five League Cups.

His return therefore carries significance beyond simply watching a football match.

It comes less than three weeks after the commission’s verdict placed the club under renewed scrutiny.

City Maintain Their Innocence

The independent commission’s findings relate to alleged financial breaches covering nine seasons from 2009-10 through 2017-18.

According to the Premier League, the commission found that City had arranged or relied upon so-called โ€œshamโ€ commercial agreements, misstated accounts and breached both Premier League and UEFA spending limits. It also found three of four alleged failures to cooperate with the investigation.

Manchester City have strongly rejected the findings.

The club lodged its appeal on October 1, describing the commission’s opinion as containing โ€œclear material errorsโ€ of law, principle and fact and maintaining that it has evidence supporting its position.

That appeal means the legal battle is not over.

Guardiola Has Already Backed His Former Club

Guardiola’s decision to return to the Etihad would follow a public message of support he issued after the verdict.

The former manager said he remained behind City’s owners, chairman, players, staff, current manager Enzo Maresca and supporters.

He also told City fans that he was there โ€œmore than everโ€ and that they would get through the situation together.

His planned appearance at the PSG match would therefore reinforce the position he has already made publicly clear: despite leaving his managerial role, his connection with Manchester City remains strong.

A Different Etihad for Guardiola

Guardiola’s last season in charge ended a remarkable 10-year managerial era.

He left the club after winning virtually every major honour available, but his next visit to the stadium will take place under very different circumstances.

Instead of standing in the technical area, Guardiola is expected to watch from the stands.

And instead of returning simply as a former manager watching his old team, he will arrive while City are appealing one of the most significant disciplinary findings in Premier League history.

The timing makes his return particularly notable.

City Face PSG After Liverpool Test

Before welcoming PSG, City’s next competitive fixture is a trip to Liverpool on Sunday, October 11, following the international break.

They then return to Manchester for the Champions League meeting with the reigning European champions on October 14.

That makes the PSG match the first opportunity for Guardiola to return to his former home and publicly show his support in person since the verdict.

GUZ Analysis: More Than a Former Manager Coming Home

Guardiola’s expected return is interesting because it comes at a moment when Manchester City are dealing with uncertainty away from the pitch.

The club’s appeal means the commission’s findings are not yet the final word in the dispute. But the verdict has already changed the atmosphere around City.

Guardiola’s presence, therefore, carries a symbolic message.

He has already made his position clear publicly. Returning to the Etihad would put him physically alongside the club at a moment when City are defending themselves against serious allegations and preparing for the next stage of the legal process.

For a manager who spent a decade building his legacy at Manchester City, it is also an unusual first visit home.

He will no longer be the man responsible for the result.

But he could once again find himself at the centre of attention.

What Happens Next?

Manchester City’s appeal will determine what happens to the commission’s findings and any subsequent sanctions.

For now, the club continues its season while the appeal process moves forward.

And on October 14, if Guardiola does attend as expected, the Etihad will welcome back the man who delivered the most successful era in Manchester City’s history โ€” this time as a supporter watching from the stands.

GUZ Sport will follow Guardiola’s return and the latest developments surrounding Manchester City’s appeal.
