NOTTINGHAM — Nottingham Forest manager Vítor Pereira has confirmed that Brazilian defender Murillo will remain sidelined for the club’s Europa League semi‑final first leg against Aston Villa at the City Ground.
Forest enter the all‑English tie with several fitness concerns as they juggle their European campaign and Premier League survival fight. Murillo, who suffered a muscle injury earlier this month, has yet to return to full training.
“He is trying to come back as soon as possible, but he is not ready for tomorrow,” Pereira said. “He will not be long, I believe. Hopefully a few more days and he will be back. I don’t have a magic ball, but I think he is recovering.”
⚽ Defensive Concerns
Murillo’s absence leaves a gap in Forest’s back line. Pereira’s preferred replacement, Jair Cunha, is also a doubt after being forced off during last Friday’s win over Sunderland. The Brazilian centre‑back took part in team training earlier today but remains uncertain for the first leg.
“Our medical department are working hard to put everyone in condition to help us,” Pereira added.
If Cunha fails to recover, Forest may turn to Joe Worrall or Andrew Omobamidele to partner Willy Boly in defence. Pereira’s tactical flexibility has been tested throughout the season, and his ability to adapt could prove crucial against Villa’s attacking threat.
🩺 End‑of‑Season Strain
Forest’s injury list reflects the toll of a long campaign. Pereira acknowledged that fatigue and fixture congestion have affected his squad.
“Some problems, as every team has in this moment,” he said. “We are at the end of the season and have a lot of games. The injured players are trying, the medical department are trying their best to recover everyone, but we will see which players we have. For sure, we will start with 11 and I hope we will finish with 11.”
Despite the setbacks, Forest’s spirit remains high. The club’s Europa League run has been a bright spot in a challenging season, and the City Ground atmosphere is expected to be electric when Villa visit.
🏆 The Match Up
Aston Villa arrive in strong form, having impressed domestically and in Europe under Unai Emery. Forest, meanwhile, will rely on home advantage and their passionate supporters to gain an edge before the second leg at Villa Park.
Pereira’s side have shown resilience throughout the competition, eliminating several top sides en route to the semi‑finals. The manager’s emphasis on teamwork and defensive discipline will be key to containing Villa’s attacking trio.
🔴 Forest’s Focus
Beyond the Europa League, Forest remain locked in a battle to secure Premier League safety. Balancing both competitions has stretched the squad, but Pereira insists his players are ready to fight on all fronts.
“We are ready to fight,” he said. “Every game is important for us — in Europe and in the league. The players know what is at stake.”
With Murillo out and Cunha doubtful, Forest’s depth will be tested. Yet Pereira’s confidence and the team’s unity suggest they will approach the semi‑final with belief and determination.
