Aurelio De Laurentiis, Napoli’s outspoken owner, has proposed sweeping changes to football in a bid to keep younger generations engaged.
- Shorter Matches: Reduce games from 90 minutes to 50 minutes (two 25-minute halves), prioritizing in-play time.
- No Yellow/Red Cards: Replace traditional bookings with rugby-style sin bins — five minutes off for a yellow, 20 minutes for a red.
- Offside Rule Change: Allow more margin for attackers, encouraging higher-scoring games and reducing goals ruled out by millimetres.
De Laurentiis warned: “The new generation is our gold. If we don’t please them, we will die.”
Napoli, Serie A champions in 2022-23, are currently second behind Inter Milan and out of cup competitions, but De Laurentiis is focused on the bigger picture — reshaping the sport itself.
