LONDON — Chelsea forward Mykhailo Mudryk has been handed a four‑year ban by the Football Association following a doping offence, GMS understands. The Ukrainian international tested positive for meldonium in December 2024 while on international duty, and the FA has now reached its verdict.
If Mudryk’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is rejected, the 25‑year‑old could be sidelined until 2030, making it the longest ban in Premier League history.
⚽ Mudryk’s Career Stalled
Mudryk joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 in a deal worth £89 million, but his time in England has been underwhelming. In 73 appearances, he has managed just 10 goals and 11 assists, leaving him among the most disappointing signings in Premier League history.
His last appearance came in November 2024 during a Conference League clash against Heidenheim. Since then, he has trained individually while maintaining his innocence.
Mudryk’s camp had hoped for a swift resolution, with plans under former manager Enzo Maresca to reintegrate him into the squad over the Christmas period. His first social media post of 2025 reiterated optimism about returning, but the FA’s ruling has now dashed those hopes.
💰 Financial Fallout for Shakhtar Donetsk
The ban also carries financial consequences for Shakhtar Donetsk. Much of Mudryk’s transfer fee was structured around performance‑related add‑ons.
Club CEO Serhii Palkin explained:
“We have €30m (£26m) of bonuses in his contract. If he’s not playing, or Chelsea aren’t reaching results, we are losing €30m. That’s a big financial impact for us.”
Palkin added that he still believes in Mudryk’s character and hopes the winger will return once the disciplinary process concludes.
⚖️ Appeal Process
Mudryk has consistently denied wrongdoing, insisting he did not knowingly ingest meldonium. His legal team is preparing an appeal to CAS, which could reduce or overturn the ban.
However, the FA’s ruling sets a precedent, and overturning such a lengthy suspension will be difficult. Until the appeal is heard, Mudryk remains barred from all competitive football.
📉 Chelsea’s Perspective
For Chelsea, the ban compounds what has already been a turbulent period. The club invested heavily in Mudryk, expecting him to become a cornerstone of their rebuild. Instead, his limited output and now disciplinary issues have left fans questioning the club’s transfer strategy.
If the full £89 million fee had been paid, each of Mudryk’s 21 goal contributions would have cost Chelsea £4.3 million — a staggering figure that underscores the scale of disappointment.
🗓️ What’s Next
Mudryk’s future now hinges on the CAS appeal. If unsuccessful, Chelsea will need to plan without him for the foreseeable future, while Shakhtar will lose out on millions in potential bonuses.
The case also raises broader questions about doping enforcement in football and the impact of long bans on player careers.
