Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has broken his silence on social media following the tragic car crash in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his closest team members.
The accident occurred on December 29, when a Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck just outside Lagos. Joshua, 36, was a passenger in the vehicle and sustained only minor injuries. He was treated in hospital and discharged on Wednesday.
Sadly, the crash took the lives of Sina Ghami, Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, and Latif Ayodele, one of his trainers. Both were described in a statement by Joshua’s spokesperson as “close friends and integral members of Anthony’s team.”
Legal Proceedings
The driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged at Sagamu Magistrates Court with death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a license. He was granted bail of five million naira (£2,579), with the case adjourned until January 20.
AJ’s Return to the UK
Joshua had flown to Nigeria just ten days after his knockout win over Jake Paul, intending to spend New Year with relatives in Sagamu. Following the crash, Paul posted on X:
“Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident.”
Joshua has now returned to the UK ahead of the funerals and posted publicly for the first time since the tragedy, marking an emotional moment for fans and the boxing community.
