Courtney Lawes, one of England’s most trusted rugby stars, thinks it’s time for change. Right now, if an English player goes to play rugby in another country — like France or Japan — they can’t be picked for the England team.
Lawes says this rule is old and doesn’t make sense anymore. Rugby is played all over the world, and many English players move abroad for better pay or new challenges. He believes England should still be able to use their talent, no matter where they play.
“England selection should no longer be restricted to players based at domestic clubs,” Lawes explained.
The rule was made to protect the English Premiership and make sure players are available for training camps. But critics argue it hurts the national team by leaving out experienced stars who could help England win big matches.
With more players looking overseas, Lawes’ call could spark a serious debate. Should England stick to tradition, or open the door to all their best players, wherever they play?
