Pochettino Signs USMNT Extension Through 2030

Mauricio Pochettino isn’t going anywhere. The U.S. Soccer Federation confirmed Monday that the Argentine has agreed to a new four-year contract, keeping him in charge of the U.S. Men’s National Team all the way through the 2030 World Cup.

The Announcement

U.S. Soccer framed the extension as the start of a new phase for the program, with the federation saying the deal will let Pochettino and his staff keep building the senior men’s team while expanding his influence across the wider U.S. Soccer setup. U.S. Soccer CEO and Secretary General JT Batson said Pochettino and his coaching staff “believe in the future of soccer in the United States,” pointing to the extension as a chance to build on the momentum generated around this summer’s World Cup.

Pochettino echoed that sentiment, pointing to the reaction from American fans during the tournament as proof of what the program can become, and said he’s looking forward to bringing his experience to a wider range of areas across the federation โ€” not just the senior team.

What Happened at the World Cup

Pochettino took over the USMNT job in October 2024 and led the team into this summer’s World Cup, co-hosted on home soil. The tournament produced some genuine milestones โ€” the U.S. won three matches in a single World Cup for the first time in the program’s history, topping their group before beating Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32. That run ended in the round of 16, where the U.S. were eliminated 4-1 by Belgium.

Under Pochettino, the team also set a program record for goals scored at a single World Cup, a sign of the more attacking identity he’s brought to the setup compared to his predecessor.

Why This Matters

Extending a manager through a full World Cup cycle is a significant show of confidence from U.S. Soccer, especially given Pochettino’s rรฉsumรฉ includes spells at Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea. Reports before the deal was finalized suggested his name had also been linked with a return to Europe, with AC Milan reportedly holding conversations with his camp before ultimately appointing Rรบben Amorim instead.

With four more years secured, Pochettino now has a full cycle to build toward 2030 โ€” and a clear mandate to grow the game at every level of U.S. Soccer, not just the national team.
